Martin backs tougher animal protection

Published on Sat 21st Oct 2006

Meeting with animal welfare campaigners in the House of Commons, Cheltenham MP Martin Horwood has backed changes to the new Animal Welfare Bill that would give extra protection to wild animals which might be used in travelling shows. Martin and campaigners want the bill to include a list of domesticated animals like horses which are commonly transported quite happily but for all others to be banned from use in travelling shows.

'In this day and age there really isn't any excuse for really wild animals to be caged up and taken on tour' he said. 'If we want to see the real beauty and the real behaviour of wild animals, we can all watch the fantastic wildlife programmes on telly instead.'
