Martin questions minister over wasteful packaging

Published on Mon 30th Apr 2007

Cheltenham MP and Lib Dem environment spokesman Martin Horwood has questioned environment secretary David Miliband's commitment to tackling the growing problem of wasteful packaging.

Martin agreed with the government that preventing waste was even better than recycling it and that both were better than sending it to landfill. But he supported Lib Dem calls for tougher measures to tackle wasteful packaging, including giving shoppers the right to return excess packaging to big stores like supermarkets. Martin's questioned whether the government was right to rely on big business tackling wasteful packaging themselves.
