I agree that the state of Cheltenham roads is unacceptable and that Gloucestershire County Council has failed since it took charge of highway maintenance in 2007. 

I therefore urge Shire Hall to give responsibility for road maintenance back to the people of Cheltenham, via the Borough Council.

    our village road is deplorable they keep fixing but same holes develop so they dont do it right

    Roads in Cheltenham are in a very poor and sometimes dangerous condition

    Velia Stevens Roads are very 3rd World quite appaling.

    I think the roads and footpaths in Cheltenham are terrible. My family and friends when they come to visit are always horrified at the state of them and it is embarrassing. I have fallen several times and now have to keep my eyes on the paths instead of the views.

    The people responsible for employing Road Repairer Personnel are employing (mostly) ‘Cowboys’. Cowboys repair potholes when it’s ‘wet’ and/or when it’s ‘Cold’. Tar laying and repairs (unless urgent) should only be done in the Dry and (Ideally) when it’s warm. Repaired surfaces must be sprayed with Hot Tar and Sharp Grit.


    Firstly, the Pothole needs to ‘Cleaned Out’ of all loose stone etc., (and, if it’s wet, dried with a high-pressure air jet), then Lined with Hot Tar and, only then, Filled with Hot Tarmac. Then the outside edges of the repair Must be Sealed with Hot Tar. ASAP, or within a couple of days, it must then be covered with Hot Tar and then Sharp Grit (which should also be Dry). Gritted roads are a far better grip – and sealed roads keep the water out.


    When laying fresh Tarmac, to re-surface a whole road, where each strip touches the previous one, it Must be immediately sealed with Hot Tar, then dribbled with Dry Sharp Grit. This must also be done where the edge of the kerb touches the tarmac. The results of not doing this are very obvious, all over Cheltenham – ‘V’ shaped grooves appear, which channels the rain water into the tarmac. These grooves are Lethal for Cyclists and Motorcyclists.


    Once the new surface has had time to settle, the WHOLE road must be sprayed with Hot Tar and immediately gritted – then rolled with a heavy, multi-tyre roller. These type of roads can last many Years, instead of Months. Unsealed Tarmac is Porous so, when rain get in and the water freezes, the tarmac shatters as the ice expands – end of Tarmac road (again).


    The other option is Concrete Roads – have you ever wondered why the A417, with thousands of high-speed, heavy vehicles, thundering up and down it every day, rarely (if ever) needs resurfacing…! It may be rather noisey to drive on at 70 mph, but at 30 mph max, you’d never hear it.
