I agree that the state of Cheltenham roads is unacceptable and that Gloucestershire County Council has failed since it took charge of highway maintenance in 2007.

I therefore urge Shire Hall to give responsibility for road maintenance back to the people of Cheltenham, via the Borough Council.

It’s not only the roads. The footpaths are and have been in steady decline.

My car has had over a thousand pounds of damage over the last few years due to potholes, and the highways department have always refused to pay anything towards the damage. Since Gloucester highways took charge of road maintenance, the roads in the Cheltenham area have become worse than those in many third world countries. Hand it back the our borough council so we at least have a chance of reasonable roads to drive on!

Having suffered with hundreds of poundsworth of damage to our car due to potholes (and Glos Highways refused to compensate us for the damage!), and the number of bad potholes is on the increase, it is time to hand road maintenance back to CBC! Potholes that are painted are then left until the paint wears off, then they are painted again. This frequently happens several times before the potholes are finally filled. And why do we see a couple of potholes get filled, but several others within a few metres are actually worse, are left alone?

The state of some highways represent a significant danger to motorists & cyclists alike. Although may are marked with yellow paint no immediate action is taken.

The double yellow lines in the town are all being renewed. The work would be better put into mending the holes. The practise of outlining holes with yellow paint is a wholly inadequate means to attempt to prevent vehicle damage.
