“Fresh ideas and real community action“ - Max meets with Cheltenham’s local groups and unions

On Monday, Max met with local residents discussing the exciting possibility of a future community bank.

At the meeting at Create on the Square in Coronation Square, Hester’s Way, representatives from Gloucestershire Credit Union gave expert input about their experiences offering loans and savings to the Gloucestershire community.

Max Wilkinson, Parliamentary Candidate for Cheltenham, said “I was delighted to hear about this interesting initiative. It’s a fantastic example of how dedicated Cheltenham’s residents are to building a brighter future for our town. That spirit of community is something I want to champion as Cheltenham’s MP.

“Thank you to Pete and Lizzie George for inviting me and all the good work they are doing.”

Max also met a GMB trade union organiser to discuss the employment rights of public sector workers in Cheltenham. With Gloucestershire’s local authorities employing over 11,000 people between them and 439,000 public sector employees in the South West, making sure their views are heard on the way the country is going is vitally important – especially now, when local government budgets have been slashed by the Conservatives.

Max said “From care workers and teachers to administrators and accountants, public sector workers in Cheltenham do really important jobs with ever decreasing budgets.  As their MP, my door would always be open to their concerns, so I was happy to meet with a representative of one of the country’s biggest unions about their concerns.

“The ever decreasing budgets for local government are creating a crisis in social care, while also having a detrimental impact on our environment, transport, housing and other services.  The Liberal Democrats are committed to ending the continual erosion of local government funding and would provide a real terms increase in local government funding throughout the next Parliament.”
