A Community Action Group, The Fairview Community Association and local Councillor Barbara Clark have managed to put a halt to the auction of The Green at the front of Westdown Gardens.
The land was put up for sale by Receivers for the previous owner and local residents only found out about this one week before its auction.
Local Councillor Barbara Clark (All Saints ward) said:
“This amazing result could not have been achieved without the incredible effort of local people who worked so very hard to stop the sale.
“I would also like to thank Cheltenham Borough Council who have now placed ‘Tree Preservation Orders’ on all the trees, rendering the site impossible to develop.
"The council have also granted the land ‘Community Asset’ status, which has temporarily stopped the sale of the land. This has given the community a stay of execution of six months, enough time to agree a community bid to buy the land so it can be kept out of the hands of developers.”
