As we work to contain the coronavirus pandemic and save lives in our communities, some aspects of our day to day lives will inevitably have to change. Across Cheltenham, residents are changing the way they live and work to protect those around them.
What is not inevitable, however, is the economic hardship facing pubs and restaurants across Cheltenham due to changes in legislation that mean they will have to close earlier - and face further restrictions if infection rates continue to rise.
The need for these new restrictions has been created by government policy failures. Unclear messaging and a failure to deliver the track and trace system that we need to fight this pandemic have lead us here - and we now call on the government to protect the businesses which will suffer as a result.
We call on the government to financially help pubs and restaurants who will inevitably lose business. After people have already been through so much hardship, we cannot allow thousands of jobs to disappear overnight - especially with the furlough scheme at risk of ending when these businesses and their employees need it the most.
We call on the government to extend the furlough scheme for sectors like hospitality still impacted by COVID-19 restrictions to protect jobs, industries, and livelihoods.
We also call on the government to immediately put forward a detailed plan to fix the track and trace system, which is the only way to avoid further measures being necessary.
