Update from the Cheltenham Liberal Democrats regarding the use of racist words by councillor Dennis Parsons

The Liberal Democrat Group on Cheltenham Borough Council have voted to suspend the group membership of Dennis Parsons, effective immediately.

This decision has come after comments made during a council meeting on 15th June, where Councillor Parsons repeatedly used a racist word while recalling a childhood anecdote.
Liberal Democrat Group Leader Steve Jordan commented:
"Dennis Parson's comments caused great offence, and at an emergency meeting of our group last night (16th June) his membership was suspended pending proper investigation of complaints made."
"I would apologise to everyone for the offensive and unacceptable language used. As Liberal Democrats, we recognise the importance of the words we use and expect our councillors to display understanding to racial issues at all times.
"We have proposed an action plan for the council to help ensure that Black Lives Matter.”
This is an ongoing process and we will continue to provide updates when possible.

Steve Jordan
Group Leader, Cheltenham Liberal Democrats
